Description
Greatest fog cartoon character: Foghorn Leghorn, Warner Bros. "I say, I say, widow, maybe I been a bachelor too long."
Fog alerts: In 2008, the California Highway Patrol spent $12 million on the first Fog Pilot detection system that alerts drivers along a 12-mile stretch of the California Central Valley's Highway 99 if conditions are dangerous because of fog.
Fog domes: The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art sold souvenir fog domes when it opened its brick building in 1995. The fog domes sold out two production runs - 4,000 domes.
Fog and skin: "Fog is seductive, but dangerous, because it creates a false sense of security," according to Dr. Richard Glogau, a clinical professor of dermatology at UCSF. "It blocks out the visible light but doesn't screen any of the longer-wave ultraviolet light that causes wrinkles and pigmentation." Staying out in the fog without protection can result in severe sunburn. One benefit of the fog: It acts as a natural emollient for the skin.
Fog in baseball: On occasion at Candlestick Park, the San Francisco Giants or their opponents had to be pulled from the field because they couldn't spot the white baseball in the fog.
