Description
Summer Range: From early spring through May, Double-crested Cormorants travel northward along coastlines and water courses to breeding colonies along both ocean coasts and along the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. The birds fly day or night, usually in V-shaped flocks numbering 200 or fewer birds, but flocks can number over 1000.
Winter Range: Only those Cormorants in the northernmost range—north of a line roughly from Tennessee to Maryland—are migratory. These birds leave their summer breeding grounds in October and November, and spend winter along the Pacific Coast from temperate Alaska to Mexico; along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from North Carolina to the West Indies; and at inland sites along large rivers and lakes northward to Indiana.
