Description
Lake Manawa State Park is one of the most popular outdoor recreation facilities in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The park's 1,529 acres encompass a beautiful 660-acre natural lake. Lake Manawa was formed during a flood in 1881 when a portion of the river channel was cut off by the meandering of the great Missouri River. Over the years, the resulting "oxbow" lake, became a major outdoor recreation center for thousands of visitors. "Manawa" is a Native American term meaning "peace and comfort."
Some big improvements are coming to Lake Manawa in Council Bluffs.
A four phase improvement project will begin in 2015.
The first phase involves dredging out most of the 772 acre lake itself.
The depth of the lake right now is six to seven feet with a few areas up to 13 feet deep.
The plan calls for dredging the lake to a proposed uniform 10-15 foot depth with some areas going as deep as 25 feet for deep water fish habitat.
The time line for the project was delayed due to flooding in 2011 and is still not completely set.
Other plans call for improvements in the camping areas.
