Description
There are 15 species of cranes in the world, but only two are found in North America-the Sandhill crane and the whooping crane.
They are one of the species of bird that do mate for life but will find another mate if one of them perishes.
The “dance” of the sandhill involves the pair engaging in elaborate bowing displays with outstretched wings and leaping in the air. They often pick up an object such as a stick and throw it upward repeatedly. This behavior, it is believed, strengthens the pair's bond.
They are actually naturally gray but preen with vegetation and mud stained with iron oxide, which results in the reddish brown color.
