Description
Native to the Mediterranean, the Narcissus is a cousin to the daffodil. The flower was named for the Narcissus, the figure in Greek mythology who fell in love with his own beauty and drowned kissing his reflection in a lake. One legend tells that the gods believed that Narcissus would die of starvation, so captivated with himself was he, that he could not break away from his own reflection. The gods then changed him into the flower so that he could stay there forever. Or, perhaps you prefer the story of the flowers suddenly appearing at the spot upon which Narcissus' fell in the water. Whichever narrative you believe, the narcissus has come to represent peace, and the possibility of renewal.
The beautiful Paperwhite Narcissus, which resembles snow, is also commonly associated with the month of December and the holiday season.
Giving the gift of a Narcissus indicates you think the recipient is sweet.
Colors they come in: White, yellow and orange.
