Description
he Sass Memorial Iris Garden is sponsored by, and was built and is maintained by members of the Greater Omaha Iris Society in honor of the Sass family of Bennington, Nebraska. Hans, Jacob and Henry Sass extensively hybridized and introduced many cultivars in the 1920's through the 1950's.
Many modern hybrids can trace their heritage back to an old "Sass" iris. The garden includes about 120 Sass irises and over twenty Sass peonies. A bed of modern rebloomers along the path provide early and late bloom. A collection of the American Dykes Medal winners and a collection of the Sass medal winners make up the remainder of the garden.
Bloom time generally begins in mid-May. It is located in Mahoney State Park which is located about half way between Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska. Take exit #426 on I-80, west of the Platte River. Park hours are 8:00am to 8:pm daily. A small park entrance fee is required to enter the park.
