Description
Sunflowers are appealing for the bright color they bring to the landscape. While there are numerous varieties available, sunflowers commonly bloom during summer and a portion of fall, with the middle of summer as the peak season. With minimal care, these plants can shower your garden with color, but caution should be taken to prevent diseases and pests from damaging flowers and reducing bloom cycles.
Sunflowers are known for the way the blooms, or flower heads, turn to face the sun throughout the day. The sunflower head is actually composed of hundreds to thousands of individual flowers joined together. Single-stem sunflowers produce one large bloom per plant. This bloom may be followed by multiple smaller flowers. Multibranching sunflowers have multiple stems of flowers and bloom over a longer period. Sunflower stems can be pinched back before they flower to encourage bushier growth and more blooms. Sunflowers are somewhat drought tolerant because of their extensive root system. However, regular watering promotes healthier plants and improved flowering as long as the soil drains well.
