Description
Chalco Hills Recreation Area is located in northwestern Sarpy County, Nebraska, and approximately 12 miles west of downtown Omaha. It is located off S. 156th St in west Omaha bounded by I-80, 168th St., and Giles Road). Chalco Hills consists of 1,186 acres of which 246 acres are covered by Wehrspann Lake, an artificial reservoir. Chalco Hills also has an arboretum of native plants of the region including prairie grasses, trees and flowers. Visitors at this day-use only facility can enjoy biking, hiking, and jogging trails, nature trails, an arboretum, and native prairie grasses. Chalco Hills recreation area is popular for bird watching and is frequented by a number of species throughout the year. A bird-watching/waterfowl observation platform and blind is located on the lake. The NRD's natural Resources Center features a visitor center with a variety of conservation exhibits and nature displays.
