Artist's Description
Zinnias are named after Johann Gottfried Zinn (1727-1759), a German professor of botany who grew the plant after it was "discovered" in the New World and brought back to Europe. Zinnias are native to Mexico, Central America, and the southwestern United States.
innias are annuals, shrubs, and sub-shrubs native to North America with one species extending to South America. Most species have upright stems but some have a lax habit with spreading stems that mound over the surface of the ground. They typically range in height from 10 to 100 cm tall. leaves are opposite and usually stalkless (sessile), with a shape ranging from linear to ovate, and pale to middle green in color. The flowers have a range of appearances, from a single row of petals, to a dome shape, with the colors white, chartreuse, yellow, orange, red, purple, and lilac.
