With the 245-acre Wehrspann Lake and easy access to the extensive Omaha Metro Trails System, Chalco Hills Recreation Area at the Interstate 80/Highway 50 junction offers outdoor fun for the whole family.
Chalco Hills Recreation Area is located in northwestern Sarpy County, Nebraska, and approximately 12 miles (19 km) west of downtown Omaha. Chalco Hills consists of 1,186 acres (4.80 km2) of which 246 acres (1.00 km2) is covered by Wehrspann Lake, an artificial reservoir. The recreation area was opened in 1988 as part of Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District efforts to provide flood control and improve recreation opportunities. The Dam was built by the Corps of Engineers and the recreation area is managed by the Natural Resources District
Chalco Hills also has an arboretum of native plants of the region including prairie grasses, trees and flowers.[5] Much of the recreation area has been replanted with native species of trees and grasses.
The recreation area is popular for bird watching and is frequented by a number of species throughout the year. A small herd of white-tailed deer also reside in the area.
